My sister had a Mr. Potato Head, but that was before it came with a plastic potato. We really did stick the pieces in a potato. Yes, marketing... the toys come out before the movie now.
Thought I would answer here in case anyone else was wondering. The older ones, from the 70s, I bought myself at a dime store mostly when I was a wee tot (well, maybe not too wee). The newer ones are from Ebay and an online seller who unfortunately closed his shop.
I loved that toy as a young kid :D And yes now I always think of Toy Story when I see one. Brilliant marketing/character development on their part.

DeleteYep, I remember the "real" Mr. Potato too, the one that used a real potato. We played until my grandmother discovered her ruined potatoes!
