Monday's Muster #17

Old books today for Monday's Muster. Vintage Whitman movie star stories. I stumbled onto these several years ago on Ebay. From the 40s, these books feature popular stars of the time and were geared at younger readers. I don't have the complete series. Some titles seem rather scarce, and it is hard to find these in good condition-- cheap paper, I think, but aren't the covers fun?

Maybe one day I'll have the entire set!  That would be something.

This Week's Finds With Some Help

One garage sale and two thrift stores last week netted these finds. An old Peanuts coloring book, a fun picture book-- ever read that one?  Very colorful illustrations. And, yes, a Pyrex bowl. I don't collect Pyrex (gasp!) and will try to sell this one although it's not in the best condition. It seems the color on Pyrex scratches pretty easily.

A couple more books. Unusual swizzle sticks. An old Probe game with those cool letter cards, and a Peter, Paul and Mary LP.

The Depression Glass book had this page of swanky swigs. Fun.

Here are the swizzle sticks-- made out of barbed wire and plated in 24K gold.  They are dated 1977 on the back of the card.

I also bought two vintage tablecloths, but I have yet to wash and iron them so this is the best look I can offer right now. Will wait until I can hang out. I don't know about you, but it really bugs me to see linens, scarves, hankies for sale online when they haven't seen an iron in 55 years. If I can iron with costochondritis, anyone can!

And here's the "help" I received while thrifting: my daughter was off school and came along. I never would have bought these items without her!

Come Back To 1967

Recently I had fun cutting up a very abused 1953 Woman's Day magazine to make some collages and note cards.

I thought fashions from 60s or 70s would make nifty collages too and so found a beat up 1967 Sears catalog for sale on Etsy. Normally these are rather pricey, but this one was reasonable due to its not too great condition. Just think, there were millions of these printed; we all had them, and now they garner a pretty penny.  If we only knew...

Anyway I thought now and then I'd share some of the contents. First up: men's wear. These dress shirts don't look too dated, but get the prices!

The Beach Boys apparently had an impact on men's clothing.

The orange striped shirt reminds me of The Monkees. Didn't Peter or Davy wear a shirt like this on occasion?

There's probably a lot of men today who are glad these jackets went out of style.

I have made a few collages and notecards already. So far, I've been scanning and not cutting up.

Boy, do I wish I could go back in time and save all those Sears catalogs we had!

Wacky Pack Wednesday

Another cereal spoof today in the land of Wacky Packs. I haven't had this kind in a long while, but it's still out there after a brief hiatus.

Alpha-bits came out in the late 50s. The first mascot was a postman. Remember that? Ever try to spell a word with your cereal?

Kitchen Flowers

I brought in two daffodils from my backyard recently. Instead of getting out a vase, I stuck them in the sweet potatoes I have sprouting in water on my kitchen windowsill. The sun was coming in Easter morning, and I thought light on the flowers looked interesting.

Like that interesting texture in the background? It's called "Dirty Window." Here in Illinois, we don't wash the outside of our windows until oh, maybe, Mothers Day so I'm right in style.

Monday's Muster #16

Okay, I bet you don't know any other woman who has old horse bits hanging on her back porch. I have a "horsey" theme going on and these look good hanging there. I think they all are from flea markets years ago-- like 25 years ago. I know I didn't pay more than 3 or 4 dollars for any of them.

I also have two old bridles back there. This one I just bought last year at a local garage sale for 2 bucks. The leather is horribly dried out. I was going to take the bit off and chuck the headstall but after cleaning it and oiling it, it came back somewhat. I need to keep oiling it (not too high on my list of chores unfortunately).

This one, which is slightly camouflaged by a nylon halter, belonged to a horse I knew many years ago. He was a livery horse at a public riding stable. How my sister and I wanted to buy him, but we were in our teens, no moolah, etc. I was able to buy his bridle and hang onto it.

See-- I warned you these collections were quite varied!

The Rest of the Finds

I had no intentions of going back to the estate sale the second day.  The mister and I were on our way to the post office, but the lot was packed so instead of just driving around for a bit, we decided to go to the sale.  Everything was half off which is always welcomed, right?

I have the movie soundtrack to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang but had never seen this recording before. Pretty nifty cover art. An old box of Dennison star seals, and a long letter rack.

I had noticed this print the first day, but there was no price on it so I passed. Since it was still there, I decided to ask about it. Good deal. I know some people will think it looks dated, but it is a nice painting. Personally, I like it. It's fairly big too-- 12" x 24".

Another Thrifting Wrap-Up

Okay, you guessed it, I found more wrapping paper last week at a thrift store, plus a Milne book and a vintage Thermos.

I also went to a local estate sale and walked out with 3 vintage finds. My mother had the same blue jar. As a matter-of-fact, my dad might still have it. I'll have to do a bit of snooping. Cute flour sifter with a goose pattern.

The orange "thing" is a stacking trinket dish. Very mod design, don't you think?

And in case you didn't notice-- I actually shot these pictures OUTSIDE (last Friday)! A first for the year!

Note: If you can stand the suspense, I bought a few more things on the second day. Will post those tomorrow.

Wacky Pack Wednesday

Well, this week's Wacky is a little creepy but pretty funny. You can't avoid these this time of year at the store, can you?

Peeps were introduced in the 1950s. The candy manufacturer was Sam Born; that is were they get the company name "Just Born." The things you don't know!

It seems people either love them or hate them. I don't know if I'd go as far as to say I love them, but I like them well enough to have a box around for Easter. You have to admit they look like Easter and Spring.

Hope you have a spring in your step today!

April Snow Showers

Somehow I knew we'd have snow this April. After Sunday's post, this comes as a great disappointment around here!

And I just put my boots away until next winter...
