Mutant Sunflower

I have seen my fair share of sunflowers in my day, but I have never seen one like this. These blooms and buds are all on the same stalk. Isn't that weird?  Plus the many other sunflowers that I have blooming nearby and from the same seed packet are the usual single bloom to a stalk variety. Just when you think you've seen everything...

On A Roll

More junk to share today. A very nearby estate sale and a thoughtful aunt netted the items below. The purple thing on the far left is a sap bucket.  Remember years ago when those were all the rage? You'd be doing good to get one for five or ten bucks-- this one was 50 cents.  Even though it matches the trim on my house, I intend to paint it and add a design or words or...  How about the mod box on the right? Love it! It's a Halloween wig!

Second bottle brush tree this week.  This one is quite small which I like. The estate sale had quite a lot of Christmas angels which were very near antique store prices. Can I get on my soapbox about that? It's not a store-- prices written on masking tape, people crammed into a house, poor lighting, dirty basements... not exactly antique store atmosphere, and no recourse if you buy something damaged. Wasn't the original intent of an estate sale to get rid of stuff? At antique store prices, I don't see things moving.  All that said, I went back the second day and got this girl half off. So maybe Diane should shut up.

Another Week's Junque

Back this Friday with some more thrift and a rare Thursday estate sale finds. My local resale shop had a laundry basket of Christmas stuff this week.  Christmas in August? Guess they're either late for Christmas in July or early for the regular Christmas season. Whichever, I bought the items below.  I don't think that tree is vintage-- looks too new, although it is marked Taiwan on the bottom. The deer is old, made in Japan. That's a keeper so is the tree; I have a small forest of them I put out every December. Mrs. and Mr. Claus will help someone have a Kitschy Christmas; they'll find their way to Etsy in a month or so.

How about the atomic bowl?  Pretty nifty.  The Currier & Ives plate is none too rare. My grandparents had these as their everyday dishes back in the 60s and beyond. And for 10 cents, I couldn't pass it up.

Cute aprons!   

Yes, I have to admit that I bought this. I dunno-- something about it appealed to my 1970s roots and the fact someone took time to make a picture of a potty! Stay tuned as I intend to paint the frame. I took it apart and didn't realize until then that the frame is plastic. This piece just gets tackier by the minute!

Gardening Collages

Collage Obsession has a very summery theme this week: Gardening.  I retrieved my very beat up, slightly musty Better Homes and Gardens Gardening Book that I picked up at a garage sale last year for a quarter.  I came up with not one but two collages.

I wanted to give black and white a try when I came cross this photo.  Usually I'm not a pushover for cute kids, but this little one seems to be walking so carefully in her bonnet and white shoes that it did make an impression on me. The photo was illustrating sidewalks and how they can be stained for a more attractive look. The flower illustrations are from the same book.

The flowers on this one were from a seed catalog and scrapbook paper.  I must admit the hydrangeas on the right side look a bit like weird broccoli!  And do we love Mother playing croquet in a skirt? You can click on any photo to bring it up bigger.

The Wacky posted yesterday (8-7-13) should not have caused much head scratching.  Playtex Living Gloves, of course.  "Living" gloves does sound a little spooky when you stop and think about it.
