Grandma's Sewing Chest Makeover

First of all, what would you call this handy item?  Sewing chest, sewing cabinet, sewing box???  Whichever, I inherited it from my grandmother, via my aunt, years ago.  It was a very dark, kind of chipped stain that since it's such a short piece, the dark stain made it kind of disappear.  I called a furniture refinisher to see how much refinishing it would cost.  I referred to it as a sewing cabinet, and the furniture guy had no idea what I was talking about.  I think he was picturing a cabinet that a sewing machine would set into. Needless to say, that went nowhere so my sister suggested just painting it.  I did, three times over the years.  This is what it looked like as of last Monday.

The above paint job was for my young daughter.  I put it in her room to store "secret stuff."  Flash forward 100 stuffed animals later, and the sewing "thing" was squeezed out; she hadn't used it much anyway.

Time to repaint it once again as it came to live in my bedroom.  I didn't want to buy new paint so had to make due with what I had on hand.

Probably not what I would do if I could splurge on paint, but I can live with it until the next makeover.  Sometimes I wish I never painted it in the first place!

Enjoy!

Note: I couldn't shoot the "after" photo is the same location as the "before" since there is now snow out there!

  2. Funky! I love funky painted things.... I've had a few pieces I've started over the years, but gotten bored and it never turned out the way I "imagined", but I have a couple of pieces waiting! You have inspired me.... Cheers~
